“Words that sound true, but aren’t”

For years I’ve heard people say “Jesus is coming soon”. I personally know preachers that have preached that message for over 50 years! Lately, with all the “Jesus will return at 6:00 PM on such and such a date” predictions, I’ve been prompted to look into what the Bible says about Christ return. A little refresher course is good every now and then, who knows what will be discovered. This was revealed to me during my search. Jesus is coming “soon” is not in the Bible! In fact the Bible says, no man knows the day, nor the hour. So in reality aren’t we proclaiming to know when Jesus is coming when we say this? Aren’t we just like these other false prophets? Predicting the time as “soon”. We use these words to try to bring fear upon people so that they will turn to Christ. If a person comes to Christ out of fear of loosing their life they come in vain. Christ said if you try to save your life it will be lost, but if you lose it for Christ’s sake then it’s saved (that’s another blog post for later). Fact is Jesus could come before I finish writing this blog post, on the other hand it could be another million years or even longer. Now I don’t know about you, but a million years ain’t “soon” to me! We don’t know “when” He’s coming, we just know He is coming. Since we don’t know the day, nor the hour, we should be ready at all times! We also should correct the communication that comes from our mouth and speak the truth. The truth is simply this, “Jesus is Coming”.

Are you “That man”?

Have you ever known someone so super spiritual that they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. I often wonder if there is any hope for someone in this condition. I struggle with how to reach out to someone so arrogant. I’m reminded of Nathan when he went to David and revealed just how sinful, and cruel David had become. David didn’t realize how far he had gotten off track. Even though David knew the things he was doing was wrong, he didn’t think he would get caught, and he was even less concerned about any of the consequences of his sin. Yet when Nathan confronted him, he knew he had to repent. What about us today? Could it be that we have went astray just like David? Could it be that the path we walk is tainted with self-indulgence, greed and boastful arrogance? If God sends us a Nathan, would we do the right thing and repent? Or would we refuse to accept that we “are that man”? Lord God, my prayer is that I would seek you daily and find you. Keep me ever close to your side and protect my vision from being blinded. If sin lurks in my life please send a Nathan to reveal it, and humble me to repentance. In Jesus name, Amen.

What kind of disciple are you?

The Bible teaches us to “go and make disciples of all men” but what kind of disciples are we producing? What percentage of those who boast of being a “christian” these days are actually disciples? When I look around the religious community I hear a lot of professions, but see very few real disciples. Christian’s are to be different, peculiar, set apart and resemble Christ not this world. Yet, most of the churches energy is focused on trying to be appealing to the world using the things that make the world comfortable. This may explain why we see such a disparity between the disciples produced today vs. the examples we read of in scripture. Paul said in Galatians 2:17-18 “But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.”  Salvation comes by Grace through Jesus Christ. However, grace does not justify sin making it okay to walk in it. Discipleship comes by obedience and reverence to Him and His grace. A serious love for Christ and concern to guard that grace should be realized and kept close to one’s heart. Less we build again, what we once destroyed, and become a transgressor of His grace.

To Who? Be The Glory.

Recently I read an article boasting of hundreds accepting Christ as Savior at a perticuler church event. The article was praising the countless efforts of the staff and volunteers that made it possible to get these people saved. I was amazed! Not at the claims of hundreds accepting Christ, but amazed at the boldness of those who serve in the church accepting for themselves the glory that belongs to God. I’ve often heard people say “I led him or her to Christ”. The Bible clearly says that “No man can come to me (Jesus) except the Father….draw him:”. We don’t choose the time or place when one is converted. Shame on us for even acting like we had something to do with one’s salvation. I’m all for giving honor to whom it’s due and encouraging the dedication of God’s people. Giving God glory when someone truly accepts Christ as Saviour is my pleasure. Giving God glory for all the marvelous works He performs through His people is my joy. Telling others about how God is moving in my community is my responsibility. But ALL the glory is His! It’s through Him, by Him and because of Him that anything good gets done. Psalm 51:10 says “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” and Psalms 3:8 says “Salvation belongs to the Lord…” We need to be sure that when we speak of the things God is doing, the intentions of our heart is to give God glory, not ourselves!

Liberty, Freedom and Desire

One of the most quoted verses of scripture I’ve often heard is 2Corinthians 3:17 “…where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” But do we understand what liberty is anymore? We have been taught and deceived into believing that liberty affords us the “right” to do as we please. This attitude of we have the “right” has led us astray. When I look observantly around the church world today I can see how much has been openly accepted that God’s Word has clearly denounced. And we continue to move in the wrong direction because of the liberty and freedom we abuse. Liberty is not the “right” to do as one pleases, but rather the Freedom to do as God says. Where I live in America, we don’t lack liberty or freedom, what we lack is desire. People have the liberty and freedom to worship in churches across America each week, yet desire is what is lacking. Sometime ago, I visited a church that had one of the best worship bands I’ve heard in a long time. But the people were unmoved by the Spirit that was present. It wasn’t because there was a lack of freedom or liberty, but rather a lack of desire to worship. The worship leader was trying to encourage people to let go and let God move in their presence, but the plea fell on deaf ears. This experience brought new understanding to me about the words Jesus spoke when He said “those who have an ear to hear, let them hear”. Lord, open my ears to hear and place in me the “desire” to worship you and help me be a good steward over the freedom and liberty you’ve provided.
