“Kill the Prophet”

August 25, 2011 (Jeremiah 37-39; Psalm 79; 2 John)

From the Life Journal of Adam Proux:

Scripture: “Then the officials said to the king, Now let this man be put to death, inasmuch as he is discouraging the men of war who are left in this city and all the people, by speaking such words to them; for this man is not seeking the well-being of this people but rather their harm.” Jeremiah 38:4 NASB

Observation: The officials are trying to have Jeremiah put to death because they don’t like the prophecy he is proclaiming. To say the least, Jeremiah was not “politically correct”. He proclaimed what God had spoken to him, even though it was doom to the people. These people only wanted a “good” prophecy proclaimed from the prophet, and if he wouldn’t give them what they wanted, they would just kill him!

Application: My, my, how little we’ve changed as a people. This passage of scripture can certainly be recognized as being repeated today. The people only want a positive message proclaimed. None of that bloody gospel stuff. None of that wrath of God stuff. None of that forsake sin and live righteously stuff. Tell us what we want to hear, what will make us “feel good” or else we’ll get rid of you! God bless the modern day prophet to stand firm just as Jeremiah did, even when facing death by the one’s he was sent to help.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for Your mercy and grace that far exceeds my understanding. Your patience is amazing too. Help me hear the words You speak to me and provide courage and boldness to proclaim the message in spite of the consequences. Anoint ears, hearts, minds and souls to receive the truth, not just the “feel good” message. Whatever happens, help me hold on to Christ, in Jesus name, Amen.
